A Data Scientist’s View of the Apple Vision Pro

Author: Alex Brouwer

I walked into the Apple Store the other day with a mission: to experience the Apple Vision Pro for myself. Of course, I’d heard a lot about it, this cutting-edge device with the potential to transform how we work, collaborate, connect, relive memories and yes, enjoy entertainment.

But as a data scientist, I am particularly excited about the possibilities this presents for data analytics, visualizations, immersive marketing campaigns, and of course, watching “data science-y” movies on a personal 100-foot screen. (Yes, I said 100 FOOT.)

Here it is. And here I am, finally wearing it:

A Revolutionary Leap in Spatial Computing

The first thing I noticed when putting it on was, Whoa, this is different. It’s like having a three-dimensional live computer-generated hologram in front of your face. Apple Vision Pro, powered by visionOS, introduces a brand-new user interface controlled entirely by a user’s eyes, hands, and voice. It delivers powerful spatial experiences, unlocking new opportunities at work and at home. Imagine being able to interact with apps by simply looking at them, tapping your fingers to select, flicking your wrist to scroll, or using a virtual keyboard or dictation to type. As a data scientist, I’m thinking about how I could work with my data visualizations. I won’t just be accessing them, but fully engaging with them. Bar charts, looming overhead like a skyscraper—mind blowing. The era of spatial computing has indeed arrived!

Reinventing Data Visualization and Unleashing a New Dimension in Data Analysis

Apple Vision Pro's three-dimensional interface breaks free from the constraints of traditional displays, providing an infinite canvas for data visualization that makes that 100-foot theater seem like a speck of dust. We’ll have dynamic, interactive visualizations that allow users to explore data in real-time. This not only enhances data engagement but also aids in uncovering insights that might have been missed with traditional visualization methods. Imagine being able to present different aspects of your data analysis findings in a spatial environment, making complex data more understandable and impactful. I’ll be able to dive deep into a particular element on a dashboard, extract it into a new window and enlarge it into any size I see fit. Even better, I’ll be able to uncover patterns not seen before! I believe the ability to interact with data using intuitive gestures and voice commands will redefine our approach to data exploration and interpretation.

Immersive Marketing Campaigns Reimagined

With Apple Vision Pro, marketers can create personalized experiences for individual users. By analyzing user data, we can create visualizations tailored to each user's interests and preferences. Moreover, Apple Vision Pro allows us to take advantage of the unique capabilities of spatial computing to create marketing campaigns unlike anything before. Imagine a campaign that allows users to explore different aspects of a product or service in a spatial environment. In the market for a new car? Now you can sit inside a brand-new Lamborghini as it speeds down the Autobahn with you at the controls. (Or if you’re me, you’re in a used Ford.) Either way, you can have a truly unique experience that can help convey the benefits of products and services in much more meaningful ways.

Conclusion

Apple Vision Pro signifies a major advancement in data analysis and spatial computing. Its revolutionary user interface and the power of visionOS is set to redefine how we interact with, analyze, and interpret data. As a data scientist, it's an exciting opportunity to leverage this technology to elevate our data analysis processes and outcomes. And at Eicoff, we’re always developing new and better ways to both use and show data that can benefit our clients. So, fingers crossed, we’ll see the Vision Pro coming to a results meeting soon.

By the way, this is totally NOT me watching a movie. (Did I mention the 100-foot screen?)
